Sustainable meetings - 4 things to think about
No matter what form of meeting, event or conference you are planning, with an increasing demand for sustainability, it is important to consider how you can make it as sustainable as possible. From mode of transport, to food and activities. Here a 4 things to think about when planning your sustainable meetings and events.
1. Mode of transport
Travel to and from a meeting has the single largest impact on the climate footprint. Encourage train, bus or car pooling to get to your location. Once on the destination, walk, bike, take public transport or electrical boat to get around.
2. Meeting venue
Do your research and choose a venue that cares for the planet and it’s people. A venue that works actively with sustainability from a holistic perspective from reducing its impact with energy efficient buildings, water reduction, chemical free cleaning, minimize food waste, recycled interior and design, to fair wages, supporting the local community and biodiversity.
3. Food and drinks
As Johan Rockström, the internationally recognized professor in environmental science, says, I”f we fix the food we fix the planet”. So focus on the menu. Choose mainly vegetarian and make sure that food and drinks are ecological, locally sourced and produced and in season.
4. Walk and talk
Stimulate the energy by taking regular pauses and even try moving the meeting outside. Did you know that contact with nature promotes both physical and mental health?
Being in nature can improve our cognitive development and ability, increase concentration, the ability to recover and to deal with stress. Our mood is often positively affected, resistance increases and the risk of, for example, depression can decrease.
Plan a walk and talk, take a bike or kayak tour or go ice skating in winter time.
